Male Pattern Hair Loss

Male pattern hair loss or baldness (androgenetic alopecia) is a progressive thinning of the scalp resulting from genetic factors and the reduction in hair follicle size by the androgen hormone.*

High levels of androgen hormones in hair follicles lead to a shorter hair growth cycle, producing shorter and thinner strands of hair.*
Male pattern hair loss has a characteristic ‘M’ shape pattern of receding starting at the temples, typically affecting the crown, often leading to partial or complete baldness.*

Male pattern hair loss in men typically begins by the age of 20 years, with nearly 50 per cent of men affected by the age of 50.*

Up to 75 per cent of men will eventually experience some degree of baldness. However, the highest rates of male pattern baldness are found in Caucasians, followed by African-Americans, with the lowest rates seen in Japanese and Chinese men.*

Research has shown medical treatments (both oral and topical – directly applied to the skin) have been effective in reducing hair loss and providing new hair growth.3

Our Hair Rejuvenation Assessment

Ageless Men’s Health Clinic (AMHC) GPs are committed to providing an honest assessment, realistic goals and proven protocols for treating men with male pattern hair loss or androgenetic alopecia. Not every man with hair loss is suitable for our treatment protocols and we will honestly inform our patients, should this be the case.

An examination may include:

  • Assessment of balding pattern and degree of hair loss
  • Height, weight, body fat, body mass index (BMI)
  • General haematology, biochemistry (including iron levels), sugar and insulin levels and hormonal status (if clinically warranted)
  • Detailed photographic studies of the individual’s hair loss to ensure the treatment is delivering real and noticeable results.

At Ageless Men’s Health Clinic, if a patient’s restoration results are not delivered within 16 weeks, we will provide other surgical and non-surgical plus counselling options to ensure the individual can maintain confidence in his appearance and self-esteem regardless of the extent of hair loss.

Eventually 75 per cent of men will go bald unless they take action.

Geneticists used to believe that baldness was passed from the maternal grandfather. However more modern thinking is that baldness comes from both sets of genes. The highest rates of male pattern baldness are found in Caucasians, followed by Afro-Americans, while Chinese and Japanese men have the lowest rates.

“Crash dieting and exclusion diets can cause heavy hair loss in some individuals,” says Marilyn Sherlock, Chairwoman of the Institute of Trichologists. “Hair is very sensitive to a change in nutrients.” A lack of iron can have an impact. Make sure you exercise sensibly and take multivitamins and discuss diet with your doctor when seeking a consultation.
